Have you ever stood at the end of a high street and looked for your bank? What do you look for? What do you see? I’ll bet you anything you’ll be looking for the logo. Maybe not consciously but it’s likely that that’s what you’ll see first. The Halifax is a good one. You can see that big blue “X” from a long way off. If you want your business recognised the second someone approaches it and it could be a shop sign, a banner, in a magazine or anything. Especially when someone lands on your website. You want them to know that they are in the right place don’t you?
A consistent powerful brand image is so important. All of the largest companies in the world try to have an instantly recognisable logo. As small businesses, we all need to be doing the same thing.
If you are starting a business, the first thing to get right is your business image. Your brand. Everything then can follow on. Also in my opinion, having a logo makes your business even more tangible. You really feel like you own something to be proud of.
Personally, I like strong logo’s with high contrasting colours. I’m not saying that this is particularly necessary. As long as your logo can be recognised easily and be able to be carried throughout your promotional material, then it’s fine.
If you are thinking of updating your logo or changing it completely, I would make sure I changed everything at once. Don’t keep a load of business cards with the old design because you think it’s a waste of money to throw them away. Bin the lot. Change everything at once and launch it all at once. Consistency is very important as otherwise you will give out confusing signals about your business and that can’t be a good thing.
I’ve just launched a new A5 business card to promote my “Online Marketing System”. It’s nice thick card and a great design which screams quality. I want to get across the fact that my business operates at the highest level possible. My brand image is what does that for me.
