Do you use the meta description on your web pages? If not you could be missing out on clicks through to your website. Your listing in the Google index is an advert that needs to compete with 9 other organic listings on that page as well as the sponsored Google Ads.

I must admit I don’t always fill in the meta description. I don’t tend to on blog posts for example but I do on my ‘sales pages’.

You can’t write that much in the description. 150 to 160 characters is all you get so you need to make it as catchy as possible. I always put my phone number in the description.

Although Google doesn’t take any notice of the meta description for SEO, it is still worth doing as people are much more likely to click through to your site. Personally I think the Advert aspect of it; Simply having a good looking well formatted piece of text, is the best reason to use the description.

If you have the Yoast plugin installed on your site, adding or changing the meta description for a web page or post is very easy. You just click the ‘Edit Snippet’ section in the Yoast panel on the relevant page and add or change the text as you wish.

This is one of the many subjects that I cover during the sessions of my content marketing club. Everything you can do to boost your click through rate to your website should be done and having an understanding of the importance of the description will simply help you to grow your business.
